If the Utah Legislature really wants a reading on the number of Utahns who would like a state lottery, they should send over an aide to listen to the calls when we leave the results of the Wednesday and Saturday Idaho lotteries out of the next day’s papers.

We did it again on Thursday when the multi-state Powerball jackpot was $78.9 million. (No one had all the numbers, so tonight’s drawing is worth an estimated $92 million.)

If you had a ticket and missed the numbers printed in Friday’s Utah section, here are the numbers from the Wednesday lottery:

5,10, 22, 45, 49 and Powerball 37.

Student journalists I spent part of Friday motoring down to Utah Valley University in Orem to talk about news with some students. I love to do this because I find out so much about college students while I am there. (If you want me to visit a high school or college class, call or e-mail me at the number or address below.)

In Friday’s class, I discovered how many students wanted to go into public relations as a career. (OK, the money is better, but one rarely pleases both the clients and the news media, so the work can be miserable.)

Less than a handful of them saw a career in newspapers. More than a handful saw job possibilities in converged media (Web sites, radio, TV – or any combination thereof). Those who wanted to be in TV apparently were over at BYU.

The young people seem to understand the need for news, but they are unsure about whether newspapers will still be around when they graduate. Most newspapers will be, but they are in an unprecedented period of change.

The daily TV grid Next Monday through Friday, readers of the daily TV schedule will notice four listings at the bottom under a headline that reads: “Attention readers.”
